Library Displays
11:37 AM EST 11/10/08
Webjunction has a brand new look so I decided to do a restart of the "Pictures ARE Worth a Thousand Words" topic. Library displays are more than books these days; like whole collection Readers" Advisory, they can include all media, books, dvd, audio, what have you. So upload those photos showing your creativity. I'll get us started with this offering.

This past Halloween our director came to work dressed up as a doctor. While she really is a doctor, this get-up was the medical kind. I though, oh, doctors, that would make a great display. I asked our director to borrow her coat and stethoscope but she had already given the stethoscope to one of our staff members grandchildren. I had the books and some movies but what to do about props.

First I made a sign with the title "Is There A Doctor In the House?". Many titles for display come to mind and I bet you could come up with your own. I used the doctor coat (just a white blouse). Over the weekend, I visited the dollar store and found a cute doctor outfit for an 11" bear or doll so bought that for $1.00. I didn't have even one stuffed animal to wear the outfit. On to a flea market where I bought a bear for $.50. Cost of my display $1.50 and the time to stock it.

Some of the materials in which a doctor plays a role in the story included:
Memory Keeper's Daughter Kim Edwards
Surgeon Tess Gerritsen
Irish Country Doctor Patrick Taylor
Women of Magdalene
Rosemary Poole-Carter
Good Doctor Damon Galgut
Doctor's daughter Hilma Wolitzer
water for Elephants Sara Gruen
Dr.'s Wife Elizabeth Brundage
Lifelines C.J. Lyons

DVD's
Lake House
Painted Veil
Snakepit
Three faces of Eve
In the Bedroom
Patch Adams
Casebook of Sherlock Holmes

There are endless possibilities...lots of authors, lots of movies, whatever you have on your shelves.

Here's a picture of the display and "Ted D. Bear, MD".

Definitely wins a prize! Not only did you make it easier for others to now pull this display together at their library, but you spent just $1.50 on supplies!

I'm always excited to see how circ stats increase as a result of these topic targeted displays...you can use the stats to demonstrate the value of displays.

Thanks Carol!

Here's some pictures of our latest display. It's a tribute to the men and women who fight fires. The display includes books about the various types of firefighters, fire equipment and stories where fire plays a major role. Both fiction and non-fiction are included.

Props include cut out flames created by our Children's Librarian, Megan (who says she can do crafts, and cut flames, but computers stump her), and a fire hat and alarm from her partner's fire department.

If I do say so myself, it's smokin'!

It's been awhile since I've posted any pics to this topic. I've been waiting for YOU, the reader to share your photos of book displays. Finally, a library in my own state sent this picture of a summer reading display.

It looks fairly simple and inexpesensive, using a few props, palm trees and flamingos. I particularly like that they used the top of a book shelf for this colorful display.

Thanks to Maryanee and Luci of The Tolland Public Library, Connecticut for sharing their summer reading book display!

Here's our latest display with a look for Halloween. A witch and a bunch of scary books is all it took to make this quick display.

Fairytales for grownups

With a great list from fiction_l in hand, we created this display called Fairytales for Grownups! This display lends itself to a myriad of props. We used fairy wings, a homemade princess hat, tiny glass slippers and magic wands. Interesting display that has captured the imagination of our readers!
